About

Teal Butterfly is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to raise awareness about the early signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer by educating the public through community events and social media campaigns.

Know The Symptoms

Ovarian cancer is difficult to detect, especially, in the early stages. This is partly due to the fact that these two small, almond shaped organs are deep within the abdominal cavity, one on each side of the uterus.

  • Bloating
Many women experience bloating on a daily basis. If you notice that you are struggling with bloating chronically, it may be necessary to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist. You may also experience pain along with bloating.
  • Pelvic or Abdominal Pain
A lot of women struggle with pelvic or abdominal pain during their periods and while this is a common symptom, frequent pain in these areas could be a signal for concern.
  • Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
Various factors could cause a loss of appetite. If you notice that this is a daily occurence for several weeks, it could be a sign of ovarian cancer.
  • Feeling the need to urinate urgently or often
The health of your ovaries has a large impact on your urinary tract. While frequent urination can be a sign of a Urinary Tract Infection, if you start experiencing this symptom on a regular basis, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor.
  • Fatigue
A lack of energy could be attributed to ovarian cancer if you have tried other remedies or methods to solve this issue. Chronic fatigue and lack of energy while also balancing a healthy sleep schedule and diet is cause for concern.
  • Upset stomach or heartburn
If these symtptoms cannot be explained by an alternate circumstance or health issue and they are becoming frequent or chronic, they could be a sign of ovarian cancer.
  • Back pain
Back pain can be a sign of ovarian cancer due to the tumor spreading into your lower back. If you are newly experiencing back pain and there isn't another explanation, including strain or injury from physical activity, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
  • Pain during sex
Frequent pain during sex could be a sign of an internal issue. While there are many illnesses or issues that are associated with painful intercourse, ovarian cancer could be the problem.
  • Constipation or Menstrual Changes
Diet, exercise, basic lifestyle changes, etc. could all be causes of constipation or menstrual changes. However, if you are experiencing these symptoms all of the sudden with no lifestyle changes, it could be a sign of something bigger. Check in with your gynecologist if you find yourself struggling with these symptoms.
